The $300 router problem: what 'business-grade' actually means

Consumer routers in business environments fail in predictable ways. Here's what actually separates them from business-grade gear.

By the Felixous Technology Desk — August 23, 2026

The difference between a $100 consumer router and business-grade networking isn't speed — it's segmentation, visibility, and support lifecycles.

Segmentation means your point-of-sale system and your customer Wi-Fi can't talk to each other. Visibility means you know when something's wrong before customers do. Lifecycle means the manufacturer still patches it — most consumer gear stops getting security updates after two or three years while staying in service for ten.

A network refresh is usually cheaper than one afternoon of downtime during your busiest week. We scope these as fixed-price projects.
